Stavanger: 5 Reasons to Hike Preikestolen

Land of the midnight sun, they say. This is where the sun never sets in summer and neither could sunlight prevail in winter. If you love nature and would like to do a little hiking, Norway should definitely top your destination list.

A country lined with breathtaking fjords, you would be spoilt for choices to hike. I have personally chosen to do Preikestolen, aka the Pulpit Rock, because of the exciting view it offers from the top of the towering cliff. I have travelled to Stavanger, Norway, JUST to hike Preikestolen and you should too. Here’s why:

FAMILY FRIENDLY TRAIL
The terrain is manageable by people of all ages. I’ve seen children to people in their sixties pacing their way up. As long as you have a pair of walking shoes, you have nothing else to worry about.

SCENIC PICNIC SPOTS
The best thing about hiking is to be able to stop, sit and absorb everything around you. The Preikestolen trail has plenty of scenic picnic places to offer. So remember to pack some light snacks!

PREIKESTOLEN OVER KJERAG
Many people would have planned to visit Preikestolen, Kjerag or both. Due to limited time and after some research, I had to choose one over another and have decided to go with Preikestolen. With flatter terrain, Preikestolen is slightly easier to climb and said to have a more splendid view. Furthermore, I doubt my knees would be able to support me on the Kjerag boulder (I’m not boulder that most). However, if you prefer a more challenging climb with less tourists, you may consider opting for the latter instead and witness some base jumping at Kjeragnorway3

RAIL-FREE HIKE
No railings are installed throughout the entire trail and this includes the edges of Preikestolen. It probably sounds dangerous but trust me, it’s not. Just don’t do stupid things like leaning too far out of the edge. This rail-free hike is what makes this place so beautiful.

GORGEOUS CITY CENTER
Besides hiking, Stavanger also offers you a vibrant city center. Lined with rows of colourful shophouses, you would see unique concepts and a hot pot of many creative graffitis. Do remember to drop by Sjokoladepiken for a nice cup of coffee and desserts too.
